09 May Experience Sharing: There is No Magical Potion to Work Remotely But if There Were it Would Have Contained 4 Essential Ingredients to Make it Work.

Jane is a young woman, a full-time mom, and an entrepreneur living in Southeast Asia. Two years ago, she left her day job as a MedRep, and started her homebrewing and freelance business. Now, she is enjoying the freedom and flexibility of being a freelancer while taking care of her family.

A few months ago, her city got hit by a devastating typhoon, people were struggling to find electricity, food, and water. Some had literally no more roof over their head and despite this chaotic environment Jane decided to relocate for a while (or more if necessary) leaving her family and moving to a place where she can have access to the internet to continue her freelance business, to get revenue.

Talking with her, I was stroked by the evidence that she was experiencing the hard way and how working remotely literally change her situation. She shares with us in this article her experience, how working remotely made a huge difference for her and how to make it work for you too.

Working Remotely: How to Make it Work for You?

I have always loved writing, and it wasn’t until recently that I realized how much.

I came across an article that talks about freelancing in Upwork, and I thought maybe this is the platform I should explore. At first, I was hesitant and was full of doubts because I lack confidence and experience. But I’m so thankful on that fateful day, I took the leaped of faith and gave it a shot.

Now, 12 months later, I have completed several copywriting jobs and had great experiences working with different clients from different countries. I landed in the Digital Marketing world and brought interesting projects left & right.

I’ am still a work-in-progress. I’m working on upskilling and reskilling to new job skills; graphic designing, social media management, click funnels, and being a WordPress enthusiast.

What I like most about being a digital nomad is that there is always room to push yourself.

When I first began freelancing, all I knew was I loved to write. I did not know what to write about, and what writing styles to focus on but with time, I learned social media content creation, captioning, article writing, and SEO—converting those into killer sales copy.

Working remotely has changed my life for the better. It gives me financial freedom. Being my own boss, deciding who I want to work with, working in the comfort of my home, I can work anywhere, I can take days off whenever I want, and I can work on my own terms and schedules. The flexible ways of working remotely had helped me to spend more time with my family while growing my freelance business.

There’s no magical potion that will make you suitable for the nomad lifestyle. But if there were—it would have contained exactly some important ingredients:

MINDSET.

Your biggest asset and enemy are your mindset. As a freelancer, you will knock on a lot of doors and have a lot of doors slammed in your face and you need to have the right mindset to keep knocking until one door opens.

TEACH YOURSELF NEW THINGS.

A million times true. If you see a job that interests you but you are not 100% knowledgeable or confident that you can complete it —use it as a challenge. Once you have a good grasp of it, you can apply for those jobs and build up your experience.

DO NOT LET YOUR FEAR PARALYZE YOU.

Take those jobs that are challenging. It may be a little scary at first— but that is where you are allowing yourself to grow and discover your hidden capabilities, often times the scariest paths will lead you to the most exciting places.

TAKE RISKS.

It is frightening when you first jump into the world of freelance but never shut an open door that could still be explored, just because you are trying to protect yourself to the unfamiliar.

As Albert Einstein said:

“A ship is safe at the shore but that is not what it is built for.”

I’ am just so grateful this has worked out for me —so far.
